Jack Spurling is a thoroughly normal 13-year-old schoolboy living a thoroughly normal home life with his father, mother and younger brother in a thoroughly normal suburb of Nottingham.
One day he falls off his bike and injures his ankle. This necessitates he take time off from playing with his mates and his mum takes him on an archaeological dig. Little does he realise what fate has in store for him when he falls into a trench during the dig and is knocked out.
