Descriptions Kidnapped: Annotated and Illustrated (David Balfour 1) Free Ebook
Set in Scotland in 1751 (just a few years after the second Jacobite rebellion had been defeated in 1746) this is the story of David Balfour, a young man who sets out to seek his fortune in Edinburgh. There he is in danger from his miserly uncle, Ebenezer Balfour of Shaws.
First published in 1886, the text was lightly revised through various editions by Robert Louis Stevenson until his death in 1894.
This text of this edition is based on the ‘Edinburgh’ 1895 edition, and has been carefully compared with the Cassell 1886 and 1895 editions to catch some corrections that were only made in the Cassell 1895 edition. The 1895 editions were the last to include corrections from the author.
Hyperlinks are provided in text to many additional glossary entries for archaic and/or Scots words, in addition to the small number of footnotes made by the author himself.
The 17 illustrations are from the 1928 Macmillan Illustrated Pocket Classics edition, and the two maps are from the 1895 Edinburgh edition. The illustrations are by Charles E. Brock.
Great care has been taken in formatting the text for the Kindle, with proper typography (quotes, dashes, italics, small-caps, indents) and Kindle features (starting position, table of contents link, cover link).
The cover picture is by William R. S. Stott., Must Read Books Of All Time .
